Exploring the Emotion Within
I focused on portraiture with the intent of exploring emotions in the faces of my two brothers. Taking note of the setting, lighting, and clothing, I placed my two models in different environments to create a surreal and urban aura. Doing so allowed me to direct and control my brothers unusual ability to project an inner life. I often photographed my brothers in extreme close-up portraits to display the true emotion present on their faces.
It was a remarkable adventure to explore subjects that I was so familiar with in my daily life and discover new dimensions of their persona. While shooting I strove to create complex images that draw the viewer in to discover the details present in each photograph. Through exploring the theme of emotion, I began to create images that show a calm and reflective mental state. By playing with varying facial expressions, I created nostalgic photographs juxtaposed with powerful, contemporary portraits. As humans we can understand continuous information by looking into another person’s eyes. I ventured to explore how this fascinating human feature aligns with a viewer’s desire to experience the story behind the face.
