Hoods: More Than an Article of Clothing

The act of wearing of a hood has a different meaning for every person. I wanted to capture the different and unique circumstances in which hoods are worn. By exploring the streets of New York, Chicago, and Boston it was clear that hoods are everywhere. My images offer insight into the vast array of hoods and the people who wear them.

When you isolate this article of clothing, its societal connotations are accentuated. Faces are obscured and intrigue is created.

I wanted to emphasize the wide spectrum of people who wear hoods. From ghostly dark figures attempting to hide, stand out, or protect themselves to the innocence of a child and his trust in his mother. My series shows that a hood symbolizes a multitude of identities.

I call into question the motive behind an individual wearing a hood and how society subsequently reacts. The hood and the face beneath it means something different to everyone.Hoods are worn for multiple reasons; fashion, warmth, protection, obscurity, or maybe even as a sign of belonging to something. The hood draws interest to the face that it covers - sometimes wanted, sometimes not. When you become conscious of the power of this article of clothing, you cannot unsee it.
